Robbery at Burrolandia Sanctuary in Otumba

The animal sanctuary Burrolandia, recognized for its dedication to the rescue of donkeys and horses, has recently been a victim of theft. In the early morning of February 17, criminals stole six equines from this refuge located in Otumba, State of Mexico. Among the stolen animals are three donkeys and three horses.

According to the reports circulated, the sanctuary staff discovered the theft around 7:00 a.m. when they noticed the absence of several animals. After inspecting the area, they found a hole in the wall that the thieves had used to enter and take the equines. "It is urgent to act before it is too late," expressed Raúl Flores, owner of Burrolandia, upset by the incident.

Burrolandia, the only sanctuary dedicated to donkeys on the continent, was established in Otumba in 2006. On its more than five hectares, the refuge is dedicated to preserving, breeding, and rehabilitating donkeys and horses rescued from abuse. Some of the recently stolen animals include 'Felipe' and 'Virginia', two recently rescued donkeys, and 'Spirit' and 'Lucero', two horses undergoing medical treatment.

"We are upset and overwhelmed with emotions," shared Flores. Burrolandia is home to around 90 rescued or conservation-bred donkeys. The sanctuary's work goes beyond protecting these animals, seeking to raise awareness about the importance of caring for and respecting all species.

The management of Burrolandia has filed a formal complaint with the authorities and has asked anyone with information about the whereabouts of the stolen animals to contact them. Concerned for the welfare of the equines, the sanctuary team found traces of blood at the scene of the theft, suggesting that the animals may have been harmed.

"We are calling on our municipal president to support us in the search. It is incredible what has happened," added Flores, highlighting the importance of finding the stolen animals as soon as possible.
